Fernando Tatis Jr., 25, hit a game-winning two-run homer in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres rallied from an eight-run deficit to beat the visiting Chicago Cubs 9-8 on Monday.
Jackson Merrill started at No. 8 for San Diego and drew a walk from reliever Hector Nellis. After Nellis and closer Adbert Alzolay (1-1) retired the next two batters, Tatis hit an estimated 376-foot hanging slider into the left field seats for his fourth home run of the year.
Relief pitcher Wandy Peralta scored the winning run with a long ball (1-0) and pitched the 8th inning without allowing a run. Robert Suarez pitched 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, earning his fourth save of the year and handing Chicago its second loss in its last eight games.
Cubs starting pitcher Javier Asado pitched five innings, allowing three hits, three walks, two runs, and seven whiffs. Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish pitched just three innings, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Ellie De La Cruz hit a 450-foot home run to center field and added an inside-the-park bunt to help Cincinnati thwart visiting Milwaukee.
After a 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season ended Sunday, Delacruz had three hits, his first multi-hit game of the season. The Reds went from an 8-0 lead to just one run, 9-8, entering the bottom of the seventh inning, and his home run into the park gave them the catch they desperately needed.
Graham Ashcraft (1-1) dominated the first four innings, allowing just one hit. Ashcraft then gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.

After batting practice was postponed due to a solar eclipse, the Yankees got off to their best start since 2020, going 9-2, tying the team’s all-time record with 11 starts. This will be the eighth time in franchise history that New York has opened the season with nine games. He won 11 matches. Alex Verdugo added an RBI single and the Yankees scored 24 runs for their third straight win. Cortez (1-1) started the first two games and posted a 6.30 ERA before pitching eight innings for the third time in his career, allowing two hits.
Miami’s Jesus Luzardo (0-2) allowed eight hits and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings, the worst of his career. In a game against the Yankees in Miami last August, he allowed seven runs and walked five, the worst of his career.
